The Neuroscience of Sugar Cravings and How to Break Them

A 2019 randomised trial in the International Journal of Obesity found that participants who used non-nutritive sweeteners as a replacement strategy (rather than cold-turkey elimination) showed significantly better long-term adherence to low-sugar diets — with a 38% higher rate of sugar reduction at 12 months compared to abstinence groups. The theory is that maintaining sweetness while eliminating glycemic consequences provides a bridge strategy that gradually recalibrates sweet preference thresholds without triggering deprivation-induced rebound eating.
